Defends federal response to violent demonstrators.
Attorney General Barr appeared before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday to answer questions regarding the Justice Department’s reponses to violent demonstrators in the wake of the George Floyd protests. AG Barr defended the federal crackdown on demonstrations describing those attending as “violent rioters and anarchists have hijacked legitimate protests.”
Tuesday’s hearing marked the first time AG Barr spoke to the committee since he assumed his role 18 months ago. Certain members of the committee described the actions of the Justice Department as stirring up discord in the country.
AG Barr disagreed with the committee members’ description of peaceful protests, saying that “the rioters come equipped for fighting” and that the nightly activities in Portland “cannot reasonably be called protests.”
